A Fun Event with a Serious Cause

Join Save A Horny Friend Foundation and the elite of San Diego for this year's coolest fundraiser - a night of laughs, music, delectables, top comedians and special guest, the CEO of the world-famous Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Richard Vigne - to raise money for the conservation education in Tanzania and drone surveillance programs in Kenya to prevent the poaching of our most beloved large mammals, the rhinos and elephants!

The current poaching crisis has become so bad that we estimate 200,000+ elephants and 6000+ rhinos have been poached in the last six years, with an expected extinction horizon of 2025 if we don’t act quickly.

Through the use of modern technology such as drones and ground surveillance, we have hope to not only detect and catch the poachers before they are anywhere near the rhinos and elephants, but also to protect the lives of the anti-poaching rangers, 1000+ who have recently been murdered by poachers as well.

The elephant and rhino poaching crisis is out of control with this month's reports that at least two African countries have lost over 50% of their elephants in the last three years. The United States is responsible for an estimated 30% of recently-poached ivory sales. After being carved in Asia, the ivory is smuggled into U.S., either presented as antique through staining techniques or as black market new carvings. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have amassed this ivory from a multi-year undercover operation, which has resulted in 10 convictions of traffickers.  The ivory to-be crushed at this event was used as evidence in those cases, as well as education and training for officers and detection dogs. What a wonderful experience to be able to return to my Alma Mater where I first launched Save A Horny Friend in 1993!  It was exhilarating to be able to thank the teachers who had helped get this started so long ago and to be able to engage the current students who are enthusiastic to participate on the conservation level, the create level and the robotics level!  Thank you Mark Trafton, Townley Chisholm, David Shepley and Joel Lotzkar!

In honor of Earth Day 2015, Save A Horny Friend Foundation hosted an Earth Day Party and SAHF Fundraiser and invited many other nonprofits and green organizations to join, including Kill the Cup, Neqtr, San Diego Green Drinks and honored our favorite restaurant Cafe Bar Europa "The Turquoise" - an eternally sustainable restaurant in the hippest part of San Diego who for years has supported "saving horny friends."

With over 50 people in attendance at our first live fundraiser since we went live, we had a fantastic time making rhino horns out of toothpicks, watching acroyoga performers, learning from quiz facts and raising money for this worthy cause!

IVORY FOR SALE

San Francisco is the most important US city in the fight against the importation of ivory, with Los Angeles a close second.   Mostly these two cities, but others as well are responsible for about 30% of the world's recently-poached ivory.  It appears that both tourists as well as permanent residents in the US with an Asian background

With ivory still being sold openly in San Francisco, I was compelled to go see the ivory for myself... and so did by being cooperative and befriending one of the ivory vendors, I was invited into the bar room as he tried to sell me mammoth ivory. 

In truth the mammoth ivory is easy to identify as it has striations called Schreger's Lines that are easy to recognize from those found in elephant ivory.  There are several other animals from whom we collect ivory as well: walrus, warthog, sperm whale, killer whale, narwhal, and hippos, however the elephant ivory is the most prized because of its size and heritage in Asian cultures.

UAVs & DRONES

Although Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are being developed and have drawn quite a following from hobbyists to business entrepreneurs eager to fly goods from point A to point B. UAVs have traditionally been called remote controlled crafts, but most commonly today we call them drones because they are able to be pre-programmed to fly on their own, hence the name drone.  Another important point is that these "drones" are much smaller than the military drones and can usually be carried by one person. 

Here is the photo of me and two Airware employees with a fairly large UAV that could possibly be used to stop poachers. I attended the Silicon Valley Chapter Meeting of the AUVSI, which was held at AIrware.  The next day I established meetings with Drone Deploy and 3D Robotics - what a thrill to enter their offices where the magic happens!
